Calls for more investment in ageing population

A report published by the Ready for Ageing Alliance calls upon the UK government to take action on care for the elderly. The Alliance wants the government to invest more funds in elderly care to prevent gaps appearing in the system within the next 20 years.  The report, Getting ready for ageing,  states that the number of people aged 85 and over is set to increase by 100% within 15 years and points out that no steps are being taken to prepare for this. There are recommendations for policies on housing, social care, health care and communities within the report, which points out that more needs to be done immediately.  The Alliance wants the government to build more homes suitable for the elderly and look at ways in which the elderly can retain their independence for longer and play an active role in their community. The MD of a domiciliary home care service has welcomed both the report and the recommendations that it makes, stating that it is expected that there will be a significant increase in demand for domiciliary home care over the next few years due to the increase in the number of elderly people. The Alliance comprises representatives from a number of different organisations, including the Alzheimer's Society, Carers UK and Age UK.  These representatives are working together to raise awareness of the issues associated with an ageing population and to promote the solutions that will ensure the system can cope.
